Background & Career

Aoife grew up in County Cork surrounded by some of Ireland's finest coastal scenery. Her passion for walking heritage developed early—long Sunday afternoons exploring the countryside with her grandparents shaped her understanding that age isn't a barrier to adventure. It simply means being smarter about how you plan.

She studied Geography and Environmental Management at University College Dublin, graduating in 2010. During her degree, she became fascinated by landscape accessibility—the question of how places are designed and whether everyone can actually enjoy them. That curiosity led her directly into trails work.

Her early career started with the Irish Mountaineering Club as a trails officer, where she cut her teeth on trail maintenance and route documentation. But she quickly realised her real interest wasn't maintaining mountain paths for serious hikers. It was understanding how different people—particularly older adults—experienced Irish landscapes differently.

Around 2014, she shifted focus entirely toward senior-accessible route development. This wasn't a niche market. It was a genuine gap. She began working directly with walking groups across Dublin, Wicklow, and Clare, leading trips, taking notes on what worked and what didn't, building real knowledge through experience rather than assumption.

Over the past decade at reservesquare Limited, she's assessed over 200 walking routes systematically. That means physical site visits, detailed terrain evaluation, accessibility audits, and honest conversations with retirees about what they actually needed from a walking guide. Her assessments aren't theoretical—they're built on years of walking alongside older adults and understanding their real concerns.

Her most significant contributions include comprehensive guides to the Cliffs of Moher trail—probably Ireland's most visited coastal walk—the Howth Head loop accessible from Dublin, manageable sections of the Dingle Way, and detailed seasonal guides for Wicklow Mountains. These guides have helped thousands of older walkers discover Ireland's natural beauty with genuine confidence rather than anxiety.

What drives her work is straightforward: age shouldn't mean missing out on Ireland's most stunning scenery. Whether it's the windswept cliffs of Clare or the forested valleys of Wicklow, there's a way to experience these places safely and enjoyably. Her job is figuring out how and explaining it clearly to others.

Why Her Expertise Matters

Aoife doesn't approach walking guides as abstract exercises. She's walked these routes alongside older adults. She's heard their concerns, watched them discover confidence, seen them realise that age is just a number when you plan properly. Her guides come from real experience—over a decade of it—not theory or assumptions about what seniors want.

She understands the practical details that matter: Where do you actually rest on the Cliffs of Moher walk? What's the real gradient like, not the simplified version? How does Wicklow change between seasons? Which sections of the Dingle Way work for someone with limited stamina? These aren't abstract questions for Aoife—they're the foundation of everything she creates.

Her systematic approach to route assessment means you're getting honest evaluations, not marketing spin. When she rates a trail as suitable for retirees, she's assessed it properly. When she suggests an alternative route, she's actually walked both options and understands the genuine differences.
